Silent Storytellers
As I observed the eyes of my past artwork I realized once again how powerful the black and white drawing can be. I chose to go back to basics and try to understand what I am looking at and see if my art addresses my bellwether statement, “Look at me I have something to say.” Observing the model in values of black and white is like cleaning out a closet by taking everything out and putting back what is essential. A tonal drawing needs only paper, chalk, a blender and an eraser. Now, that’s getting back to basics.
Going through several years of my art to find past examples of how I have drawn the eyes of a model is a revealing exercise in the development of my drawing skills. When looking into someones eyes, look for the sparkle, the catchlight that says, “I am alive!” Without the sparkle something is missing.
I have my goal for this year. It is to go back to basics and focus on the silent storytellers of the soul, the eyes.
