BEAUTY
Where is beauty found? In the valleys of shadow, Where light and dark doth abound.
I read and study many art books. While reading “Drawing the Head for Artist” by Oliver Sin, I came across a beautiful way to describe drawing the wrinkles in the face of the elderly. Sin says, “Remember that wrinkles are not actually lines in the face, but very delicate valleys of shadow…” I have always observed aging hands and faces with great respect for the amazing character of the wrinkles and the stories that are told in the multitude of lines, but this statement gave me another way to think about the art of aging. This image of my mother is an effort to capture her wisdom and my deep love for her. Now, I see the aging face with lovely “valleys of shadow.” Thank you Oliver Sin for a new and different way of seeing and thinking.
